Publishers Weekly says “A slick, darkly comic bad guy vs. Bad guy crime drama…an expertly choreographed death dance showcasing Maxim’s storytelling strengths farce, blisteringly paced action, and memorably peculiar characters.
At age 34, Adam Whistler wants out. But the service he performed for his government is not the kind they let you walk away from.
To ensure his continued good health, Whistler has “borrowed” important documents from his boss, Felix Aubrey, a dangerous rogue and a very bad man to cross. But so is Adam Whistler, who learned the killing craft well under the tutelage of his father. Now, with a ticking time bomb on his hands, Whistler has been cast into a maelstrom of death and chaos. His continued existence may well depend on a group of assassins linked to the legendary Paul Bannerman, as well as his very own guardian angel.
His gentle and beautiful lover, Claudia – clinically dead after being shot by Aubrey’s hired guns – has been sent back, she believes, by the storied “white light” to protect him. Whistler doubts it, of course, She does not. And she has the talents and powers to prove it.

Whistler Angel The Bannerman Series edition by John R Maxim Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
What's the best part of reading a John R. Maxim novel -- is it the engaging plots or the fully animated, totally alive characters? I hope you're not looking for an answer here, because I can argue forcefully for either answer. I have read and re-read all of Maxim's books, and just can't get enough!
Whistler's Angel is the sort of book that keeps you up at night. You promise yourself that you'll go to bed at the end of the current chapter, and an hour later you're still furiously turning pages. His characters are so fully realized that you feel that you now them as friends by the end of the book. Maxim also does something that few authors try...he cross-populates his books. Whistler's Angel is a stand-alone, non-series book (at least so far), and yet characters from his popular Bannerman series appear in the plot. [To return the favor, Whistler's Angel characters appear in the new Bannerman book, along with other Maxim characters. Even one of the main Bannerman characters first appeared in Time Out Of Mind.]
You'll find good descriptions of the plot of this book elsewhere on this page, so I'll spare you my own synopsis. Suffice it to say that this is a great book that guarantees the reader many hours of pleasurable reading. The plot has more than enough twists and turns to satisfy even the most demanding reader. Also well featured is Maxim's trick of showing you a piece of the plot, and then bringing it back later so you can see it from a different angle, and get a new and deeper meaning from it.
When you're done with this book, you'll also want to try Shadowbox, Haven, and all of the Bannerman books. Becoming a Maxim fanatic is well worth the effort!
This novel is a good companion to Maxim's "Bannerman" series. Although Bannerman doesn't actually appear in this book, he's mentioned several times, and some of his associates pop up for cameo appearances. Above all, this novel boasts Maxim's deft writing style and flair for characterization. A real page turner.
This Whistler novel, however, doesn't have as hard an edge as the Bannerman series. In fact, there are times when the characters, especially the villains, get so bizarre that the action reminds me of a Carl Hiaasen novel. One bad guy in particular fits the Hiaasen mold a raving right-wing religious nut, sporting gashes in his face from cut glass (and telling people that the cuts were wasp stings!), who is toting a golf bag full of bombs, sandwiches and bottles of Snapple. But like all Maxim characters, the writing is fluid and descriptive, you can picture this yahoo walking down the street in his golf spikes. Great stuff.
The protagonist of this novel, Adam Whistler is a very memorable character. Throw in Adam's connected father, the curious twins", and the guardian angel herself, Adam's new girlfriend Claudia, and you have yourself a truly outstanding cast, one that makes this book a sheer joy to read. Maxim is truly a top-shelf crime fiction writer.
This review applies to the version that exists as of 2/26/2012.
It really pains me to do this.....
I've read this book before in paper version. It's a great book, by a great author.
I originally, reluctantly, gave this a 1 star review because of poor formatting, in a great book.
I emailed Mr. Maxim through his website to let him know of the problems, and received a very quick reply that he was working on an updated version to fix the formatting issues. I've raised my rating to 3 stars based on that response.
I'm seriously hoping to update this review to a 5 star rating in the near future, if the new version is more readable. The book deserves the 5 star rating, as does Maxim!

If you want to truly get lost in a fast paced book with fabulous characters, try reading this series; you will love it!
Great
A good tie in with the Bannerman series.
I latched onto this author with Shadow Box, Haven and Mosaic, all enjoyable. I couldn't finish Bannerman's Promise and thought Maxim might redeem himself with Whistler's Angel. It could just as well been titled Bannerman's Angel. None of the characters were believable. The dialouge was straight from a "B" movie. The villains, a parody of "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight." The only reason I finished this book was because I had no other book as a backup. Unless you're happy with the Bannerman character, I'd advise all to save their money, and I hope Maxim regains his touch.
